SFSU Temporary Library Surge
We were hired by the university to design 40,000 SF of library surge area to accommodate library surge space for the campus main library. The challenge was to occupy the space within 9 months from the start of the design.
First, we assisted the university in selection of the building system. Considerations included structural system impact on the interior program layout, cost, and schedule. Based on the requirements, Sprung Building System was selected. The structure allowed large open space which could be installed in a short time while providing a durable structure. Then we developed the program scheme based on detailed brainstorming sessions with the library staff.
Concise permit construction documents were prepared to be reviewed by 3 regulating agencies. Accessibility components were reviewed by DSA. Fire Life Safety issues were reviewed by the Office of State Fire Marshal, and the structural topics were reviewed by the university peer review. Multiple construction packages were generated to facilitate accelerated project delivery.
The project was constructed utilizing Construction Management-at-Risk (CM-at-risk) type fast-track approach with multiple packages. We assisted the university in generating documents required for sub-contractor bidding within overall general contractor’s management. Close working relationship with the general contractor was established to achieve the construction goal.
The project was initiated in February of 2008 and the buildings were occupied by November of 2008.
