There are 24 ribs in each one of these children…
These children and many others, through history of time, entered lives of confusion, chaos, and pain. There are no words to describe their suffering, and there are no ways to experience their pain. They were railed to their final destination, with no way to return.
However, their lives were not in vein.
From their brief existence in this world, we take glimpse of hatred in this world.
More importantly, we see the hope that shined through their hearts.
24 columns are arranged to symbolize their bodies subjected to chaos and pain. The column orientation is irregular in the beginning and becomes orderly in the end. The columns are sheathed in translucent, light emitting, fiber embedded concrete. Metal panels are installed between the columns and have shards of opening. One can look into and out of the openings. The path elevation descends gradually. It consists of decomposed granite and wooden rails. There is a bright column at the end of the path and a place to pause, open to the ocean… The path continues around the perimeter, and allows glimpse of others who are walking toward the light.
