The community development of Sea Ranch, California played a significant role in creation of California Costal Commision. The original intent of the community development was to preserve natural amenities of the surrounding coastal environment.

Following the original intent, the project scope included a design of vacation house designed to blend into its coastal setting. Approval was subjected to Coastal Commission and Sea Ranch Association criteria. Prevailing winds, views, screening of activities, and natural finish materials were key factors influencing the design.
