Rebuild of a 1962 hilltop residence lost in the 1991 Oakland fire storm, the design of the new house reflects personal interests of the owners. The owners, both teachers, have strong personal interests that impacted the develpment of the original house. The husband is an avid woodworker who enjoys finely detailed wood carvings. The wife enjoys quilt work. Both have interests in landscaping.

The design incorporates sensitive wood forms and craftsmanship and is sited to give access to a variety of outside landscaped areas within the restrictions of a steep downslope lot. Built-in features are designed to incorporate the quilt and upholstery work.

Additional design elements include crafted wood entry court separating the entry road from the residence, and multiple decks on the east facade which opens to the highly landscaped downslope overlooking the canyon below. The decks are designed to provide sun protections for the downslope facing rooms.
